HISTORIC HAWAI‘I FOUNDATION
Kamehameha V Post Office
Built: 1871
Bethel and Merchant Streets, Honolulu
Hawaii’s first all-concrete building, the Kamehemeha V Post Office was built by J.G. Osborne in 1871 using pre-cast concrete blocks reinforced with iron bars. Its successful use of concrete led to the building of other concrete structures, including the original Royal Hawaiian Hotel in 1872.
