More About the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium
HISTORIC HAWAI‘I FOUNDATION
Did you know that the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium was constructed in the water? As you can see from the photo below, the natural shoreline was rocky-- not sandy. The Natatorium shelters Kaimana Beach and has allowed the sand to accumulate, forming the beach we know and love today. The Natatorium also allowed the shoreline to expand to accomodate volleyball courts (which were originally pools) and parking spaces.
The City and County of Honolulu's proposed demolition and beach construction project would eliminate 46 parking stalls along the access drive and 31 Natatorium parking stalls now reserved for safety personnel.
