Hawaii State Capitol Building
415 S. Beretania St., Honolulu Hawaii
Built: 1968
Architects: Belt, Lemmon & Low (Architects Hawaii) and John Carl Warnecke
The design of the Capitol building is based on three significant themes:
1. We are an island state; the building is surrounded by water.
2. We are a volcanically created state; the legislative chambers are shaped like volcanoes and are faced with volcanic rock.
3. Royal palm trees have traditionally represented the ali‘i; the capitals of the massive concrete columns are reminiscent of royal palms.
