The Hawaii State Capitol's design is based on 3 significant themes:

1. We are an island state; the building is surrounded by water.
2. We are a volcanically created state; the legislative chambers are shaped like volcanoes and are faced with volcanic rock.
3. Royal palm trees have traditionally represented the ali‘i; the capital's massive concrete columns are reminiscent of royal palms.
