Photo by Mason Architects for Honolulu High Capacity Transit Corridor Project
Originally, this 1941 CINCPAC (Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet) Headquarters Building had two stories above ground and a bomb-proof shelter in the basement. By early 1945, an additional story had been built on top and the original stories were surrounded by lanai corridors.
Admiral Chester Nimiz, Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet, moved his office into this new building in August 1942. The building continues to serve as the distinguished headquarters for the commander of the Pacific Fleet, though the acronym for the commander is now called "PACFLT."
