First illuminated on May 1, 1913, the Kīlauea Lighthouse guided thousands of ships and airplanes from its northernmost point of the inhabited Hawaiian Islands. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and became part of the Kīlauea National Wildlife Refuge in 1985. Although it is no longer an active station, thousands of people and wildlife visit the lighthouse each year.
