Lāna‘i City is the only town located on the island of Lāna‘i. Located high in the center of island, Lāna‘i City retains the character of its plantation history.
The plan for the town was laid out in a grid pattern developed by James Dole in 1922, with the tree-lined Dole Park running down the center. The majestic Cook Island pine trees truly add to the character of the town.
Lāna‘i City is significant as the last intact plantation town in Hawai‘i, and it represents the plantation towns that once flourished in the Hawaiian Islands. Lanai's economy today is primarily based on tourism, with two major resorts located on the island. Lanai’s unique plantation community is a definite draw for tourists. The town is unlike anywhere else in Hawai‘i, making it especially attractive to visitors seeking a truly unique experience.
A nomination for the Lāna‘i City Business Country Town district to the Hawai‘i Register of Historic Places was recently reviewed by the Maui County Cultural Resources Commission and will likely be reviewed by the Hawai‘i Historic Places Review Board in spring 2009.
