Seminar Abstract

Historic Hawai‘i Foundation is offering a continuing education (CE) seminar that will provide an overview of Hawaii’s built environment, including architectural styles, town development patterns, significant architects of Hawai‘i, and historic preservation programs and tools.  The audience for the seminar is professionals in the fields of real estate, planning, architecture, landscape architecture and others with an interest in the built environment.

The bungalow style was popular in Hawaii particularly between 1900 and 1940. Bungalow homes could be built by patterns or even pre-cut kits sold by Sears and Roebuck Catalog.
The seminar will provide visual and interactive instruction in how to identify styles of homes that have contributed to the architectural history of Hawai‘i, and to understand the tools available for preserving Hawaii’s architectural history.  The seminar will provide classroom instruction presented by Hawaii’s leading architectural historians and preservation professionals.

The key segments of the seminar will be:
1.  Hawaii’s Early History and Architectural styles as adapted in Hawai‘i.
2.  Hawai‘i Modernism and Recent Past, including town development patterns, important architects of the 1930’s, Hawaiian-style architecture and modernism/internationalism interpreted in Hawai‘i.
3.  Historic Preservation Tools and Standards, including a discussion of the Hawai‘i Register of Historic Places, economic incentives available for historic preservation, maintenance and repair of historic houses, rehabilitation treatments, including hazardous material abatement, and a review of myths and facts about the Historic Register.

Each participant will receive a full-color manual of seminar materials.
