HAWAIIAN ORAL TRADITION DESCRIBES 400 YEARS OF VOLCANIC ACTIVITY AT KILAUEA
6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Atherton Hālau, Bishop Museum
$5 General Public; FREE for Members.
Reservations Recommended.
The Hawaiian oral tradition of Pele (the Hawaiian volcano deity) and her youngest sister Hi‘iaka, combined with accounts from the first Europeans to visit the summit of Kilauea, describe 400 years of volcanic activity at the summit of Kilauea during a period of time that until recently, was poorly understood by science. In recent years, volcanologists have begun to decipher this period of time at Kilauea and have found remarkable correlations between volcanic eruptions described in the epic tale of Pele and Hi‘iaka and the results of modern geologic research. These recent geologic studies confirm the essence of Hawaiian oral traditions and illustrate the potential value of examining other Hawaiian chants and stories for more information about past volcanic activity in Hawaii. This captivating lecture will be delivered by Don Swanson, U.S. Geological Survey, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. T
