EXPERTS TO EXPLORE TOPICS RELATED TO CULTURAL PRACTICES
Weekly Lecture Series Begins January 26
Native Hawaiian Culture will be the theme of the 2012 annual Experts at the Palace lecture series, now in its 25th year. The free weekly lecture is open to the public. It is held in the Kana‘ina Building (Old Archives Building) on the grounds of ‘Iolani Palace on Thursdays from 12 noon to 1:00 pm from January 26 through March 1, 2012.
Parking is available on the palace grounds. Municipal parking is available in the Ali‘i Place garage at 1099 Alakea Street.
The speakers and topics will be:
- January 26: Hi‘ilei Kawelo (Paepae o He‘eia) on “Mālama Lokoi‘a-Fishpond Revitalization”
- February 2: Nola Nahulu (Hawai‘i Youth Opera Chorus) on “Teaching Culture Through Music”
- February 9: Kimo Lyman (Polynesian Voyaging Society) on “Hōkūle‘a: The Revival of Hawaiian Voyaging”
- February 16: Tom Pōhaku Stone (Hawaiian Boarding Company) on “He‘e Holua: Reviving a Traditional Hawaiian Sport”
- February 23: Puakea Nogelmeier (Kawaihuelani, Hawaiian School of Knowledge) on “Hawaiian Language, Resurgence and Resources”
- March 1: E. Sunny Greer (Department of American Studies, UHM) on “NAGPRA and its Impact on Native Hawaiians”
“Experts at the Palace” is organized and sponsored by the Historic Preservation Program, Department of American Studies, University of Hawaii at Mānoa; it is co-sponsored by the Friends of ‘Iolani Palace and Historic Hawai‘i Foundation.
